Shade-grown
Commercial grade coffee plants are grown in the sun, where they don’t have the natural biodiversity that they need to thrive. As a result, the beans grow smaller – and develop less flavor.
Our coffee grows in the shade, where the plants are protected from pests (so farmers don’t need to use pesticides). With the top soil full of nutrients – like decomposing leaves and insects – the coffee is able to grow at a more natural pace. So the beans get bigger – and have a richer, more intricate profile.
Single source
Many coffee brands rely on blends, since they can be sourced year-round – and help mask stale or low-quality beans. The result? A generic, muddled taste without much (if any) complexity.
Our Coffee comes from a single source. Ensuring that all of the beans are of the same quality – and come from the same location, climate, temperature and farming practices. So the coffee has a more robust taste – and is more sustainable.
Grows at a high-altitude
To cut down on costs, most commercial coffee is grown at low altitudes, where the coffee beans can be easily retrieved. Only problem? The coffee tree endures harsher growing conditions, like higher temperatures and less rainfall. So the coffee beans mature faster than they should – and the resulting taste is… not as good.
At high altitudes (above 3,900 feet), it’s more expensive to transport the coffee beans – but worth it. Because the cooler temperatures slow the growth cycle of the coffee plant. Which allows it to absorb more complex sugars, resulting in a rich, defined flavor.
Our coffee grows at altitudes of 7,000+ feet. Which is another reason why it tastes so good!
Freshly roasted
Did you know that mass produced coffee is roasted months before it arrives on the supermarket shelves?
Thing is, coffee peaks 6-7 days after roasting – and then the flavors start to fade. So after about two months, most of the intricate, delicious aromas and flavors are gone.
That’s why our Coffee is always roasted just a few days before it’s shipped. So you get to enjoy the coffee at its peak.
Ethically sourced & fairly traded
Sad reality is, most coffee farmers are enslaved to the stock market. The coffee commodity market (aka the C Market) sets the global coffee prices, which determines how much farmers get paid. One year, coffee prices might go down so much that farmers struggle to survive and feed their families.
we pay significantly more for our coffee than the Coffee Market rate. So that our farmers have enough money to support themselves, their families and the local community.
